With my Swedish obsession ever-growing, last night I went to see Lykke Li herself at Shepherds Bush. The wait couldn't have felt any longer. Tension built with the sounds of Come Near before the 'looked like a tornado hit' mirage of a set was graced with her presence. Queue massive eruption of applause. Having only made her album available to listen to in the UK less than two months ago, the Wounded Rhymes tracks were welcomed with open arms. She didn't forget the favourites though. Dance, dance dance, and Little Bit all the way. Highlights had to be her getting down during Get Some, (which I maintain is about the music industry no matter how explicit it might be-No OG Niki), I Follow Rivers and her pelvic thrusts and Rich Kids Blues. That balcony I was standing on could have broken off cleanly from the way our section was dancing. Shout out Lykke for pointing at us!
During more relaxed moments, it was hard to remember that her little yelp of a voice turn into a great big booming entity when she's live. The indifference that you'd think is the cause as her voice drops slightly out of tune is the thing that makes the whole thing seem that little bit more passionate.
She didn't fail to showcase her covers which this time were The Big Pink's Velvet and Silent Shout by The Knife (creators of that song from the Sony Bravia advert which Jose Gonzalez covered). The cover of Until We Bleed went down pretty well as the crunk juice got gig-goers emotional and they twirled their hands towards the pretty ceilings.
Severely disappointed at the apparently very obvious wait between the end of the first set and the encore, people wanted more. There was stamping, two idiots leaving, and weary looks from a likely writer who looked like Marilyn Monroe sitting across from me, but Lykke came back with possibly the biggest rendition of Youth Knows No Pain she could ever do. Cue more swaggerific dancing to the Hammond organs. Although the gig ended bitterly with Unrequited Love and a sliver of Eurythmics, I'm not sure I could have loved it more. Love her? A little.
