Ellie Goulding - High For This (The Weeknd Cover)

There is something abour more mainstream covering r'n'b/hip hop tracks that gets me really excited. I think it's the unexpected realisation that artists listen to genres complete other to the music they make. High For This is arguably one of the biggest tracks of 2011 and it completely revolutionised what we called r'n'b now. Xaphoon Jones production makes it suited to Ellie's stlye, so although it still sounds dark, it's still as electronic as we kow her to be.

Lissie - Covered Up With Flowers

What do Metallica, Kid Cudi, Lady Gaga, Joe South and Nick Cave have in common?

They are lucky enough to be covered by Lissie, the epitome of soft rock with swagger.

In my humble opinion, this cover of Pursuit of Happiness is all you need. There's is something enchanting about seeing how artists cover rap songs. Ed Sheeran does it. Lissie does it too... With a shot of tequila and a care-free attitude. It is incredible. She also covers Nothing Else Matters, Games People Play, The Ship Song and Lady Gaga's Bad Romance. She has a habit of striping every song down to the bare minimum, making her vocals and guitar the only necessities and with that Bad Romance is a lot more tolerable.

On that note, if you like it buy it here.

Jakwob - Let It Fall featuring Rocky Nti

It's always a good feeling when you see a musician you've been tracking making a name for themselves. Based on his tweets, Mr Nti has been grafting non-stop for a year. He dropped out of university and moved to London to pursue his dream, only to end up with Jakwob as a friend and collaborator. He is an acoustic artist and makes heartfelt music that the music industry needs.

This song is the perfect blend of Rocky's unfaltering voice with Jakwob's persistent drum beat and great, big dirty synths. This is the follow up to Jakwob's Right Beside You featuring Smiler, which was an highly underrated release.

Another Jakwob song worth listening to is his remix of Video Games by Lana Del Ray, the Hollywood glamour inspired singer whose hazy melodies have made her a fan of many, including Jools Holland.

Bright Lights

After posting Your Song, I've gone into an Ellie Goulding frenzy.
Her album lights has been out for about a year, but I now realise I've barely listened to it which genuinely upsets me. I first heard of her when I was on Starsmith's myspace about two years ago, and there was a youtube posting of Under The Sheets. I've loved her since then, but I don't do well with people finding out about my personal loves. Yes. Once she became popular I ditched her. Straight after Under The Sheets came out. Ellie I apologise.
So now a re-release of her album is coming out, and I'm excited to listen to her all over again. Ellie and I are starting afresh. So, while i'm listening to all her old and new stuff when I buy Bright Lights, you should too.
